The Problem With Site Builder Apps
Restrictive and Slower Loading
Free or paid website building apps are usually easy to use for those who aren’t very tech-savvy. This can make it very appealing for business owners who want to try and do it themselves.
There are a few problems with these site builders though.
Firstly, because these apps are designed for ease of use and no coding knowledge, this requires the app to have a lot more code, referred to as bloat. This excess code can slow sites down, making them slower to load – especially what you can’t see, on the server side. Therefore, this can result in ranking below your competitors.
This is because Google sees user experience as very important, and slow loading creates a poor experience. Who hates waiting for a page and all its files to load? Everyone.
In addition, some site builders use cheap, high-volume hosting providers where you’ll be on a shared server with loads of other sites (more load), usually located in the US (because bandwidth is cheaper in the US!). If your customers are in Australia, the data will take longer to load due to the distance from the server.
From my experience, your site will perform better if your servers are located closest to your customers, and if your host uses powerful quality servers (like the ones I use). For example, when I moved my previous business website to a host in the US, my traffic exploded in the US, and my Australian traffic (and rankings) dropped.
Website building apps simply cannot compete with the power and flexibility of WordPress, ideally hosted where your clients are, or set up to maximise reach globally if you have clients worldwide.

I see and hear it everywhere… “Can you get a website for $2,000 or less?” The short answer is yes, you can. Especially if all you care about is having a simple page or two where people can see you exist, and you don’t need any bells, whistles or professional optimisation.
The long answer is you’re probably not going to get the traffic, and therefore sales, that is very possible for you.
How so?
Cheap designs may:
>> Use online website builder apps anyway, creating a site with bloat and slow load times
>> Have little or no consideration for SEO (search engine optimisation – how you get found on Google… or not)
>> Make a mess of the code, which needs to be fixed or cleaned up later
>> Only do the very basics and cut corners
>> Not factor in growth and flexibility.
All of these options not only mean spending more money in the not-too-distant future, but it also means you miss out on more clients and opportunities to make money.
I’ve seen $2,000 sites that people like the look of. But looking under the hood, I can see why they’re desperate to get clients. It’s not on the first (or even first 10!) pages of Google for anything they need.
